Take a Day Trip to St Endellion During Your Cornwall Holiday
One of the best things about visiting North Cornwall for a holiday is the sheer wealth of places there are to visit to soak up the true Cornish atmosphere. Whether you want to explore the coast and take in everything from surfing beaches to small, Cornish fishing villages, or head inland to look at the mining and farming heritage of the county, you’re sure to find beautiful areas wherever you go.
One of these small villages that typifies the beautiful Cornish countryside is St Endellion, a gorgeous little village just north of Wadebridge that will allow you to soak up rural scenery at its best. One of the best features of the village is its church, which stands on the Wadebridge road out of the village and is an excellent example of one of the small village churches that you can find throughout Cornwall. It has the typical low chapel roof and you’ll be able to trace generations and generations of local families in the graveyard surrounding it.
You’ll also see plenty of old country cottages, including some that are still thatched. The entire village is surrounded by countryside as well, and creates a truly rural atmosphere with the various crops and animals you’ll see as you travel the roads.
If you’re lucky enough to be visiting around Easter or the end of July, then you’ll have a chance to visit the annual music festival that St Endellion plays host two. The July one has been running since 1959 and the Easter one since 1974. You’ll get to see performances from plenty of local artists and works by the Endellion Quartet, a group that formed out of the festivals themselves.
One of the most notable things about the village is the birth of UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s daughter there whilst he was holidaying with his wife. They gave their new daughter, Florence, the middle name Endellion, supposedly reflecting the incredible time they had there and so their daughter always remembers this. It could also be a cynical, exploitative use of their daughter’s birth to gain support in the area through a publicity stunt, and was criticised as such by some supporters of Cornish independence, who declared they wouldn’t be fobbed off with appeasements like this.
